During week 42 we traveled the Pyrenees on a couple of BMWs from Hispania Tours.
Arriving on a sunday, we made arragements for picking up the bikes at a time suiting our time schedual. A F800GS for my friend Frank and a F650GS for myself. Both came with Touratech panniers with inner bags and tankbags. Also included was a disc lock. The 800 had covered some 35000kms and the 650 less than half. Both bikes seemed to be in good condition and the hand-over went smooth with all the paperwork being done in less than twenty minutes. The staff were polite and helpful, calling their boss on her private number to check out some minor details regarding the rental conditions.
As we'd visited the region earlier, we soon headed out of town aiming for the coastal village of Cadaques for our first stay. The coastal road from C up to the French border (N260) can be strongly recomended for low speed, yet high density of twists and turns.
Day two took us via Andorra to a spa hotel placed in an ancient 'monestario' close to Boltaña. 20 - 22 degrees, bright sun and only t-shirts under the riding gear made for a great day in the mountains. The ever present road N260 delivered lots of variation demanding focused riders. Luckily the next stop was never far away as cafés and restaurants could be found in even the smallest of villages.
Day three took us west and then north into France on the A136/D934, then eastwards again on D918/D618. These are known routes for anyone familiar with Tour de France. And although the Col de Tourmalet may be the best known mountain pass on the route, it didn't even make a podium place compared to many other mountain passes of the day. Finishing of along N230 and C28/C1412/C13 over the Port de la Bonaigua as the sun was setting made us twist the throttle a tiny bit extra heading for the town of Sort for the night. I can recomend the Hotel Brases in Sort; not fancy, not posh, not 5 star, but: Inexpencive, warm, tidy, friendly, clean.
Day four kept us in the Sort area, going back and forth on the many local roads, often dead ends on the steps of some remote farm or minor village. As the temperatures had been dropping by 6-8 degrees, a bit more clothing were needed and the heated grips of the bikes were in constant use. On the twisty, sub 120km/h roads the 650 pulled out a slight lead. When we occationally left the tarmac the 800 with its higher chassis and larger front wheel just floated past and left the smaller bike in the dust. A ten hour day in the saddle was rounded up by the local traffic police having pointers to our crossing of 'la linia blanca consequenta' - 40 Euros to local government seemed like a fair deal, at least we didn't protest... Spending yet another night in Sort, day five started of with high speed cruising over the Coll de Canto on the N260 - cold, in some places slippery (we could see the snow on the peaks of Andorra, not present a few days earlier...) but with a magnificent light as the sun made its way upwards on a blue sky. From Adrall we broke right on the C14 before using the L401/BV4241 to take us to Berga. The last leg back to Barcelona started of on the C154 and then highway-signs led the way back to our starting point.
After filing the bikes up at a gas station in central Barca, we made our way back to the Hispania Tours office (incredible easy to find once you've figured out how the streetpattern of Barcelona works!). Again we came outside office hours, but the bar at the opposite corner were more than helpful in shortening the wait for our agreed delivery-time. Once more we were met by a polite, profesional staffmember taking care of the bikes and finalizing the post-rental paperwork in minutes. Our minor remarks on the bikes( a jubber in the front end of the 800, probably due to a lost balance eight) was noticed for the workshop and that was it!
Our last night in Spain was spent in a small bar recapturing the events our our mini-tour, the conclution being; yes, we'd like to do it again, and yes, we'll most certainly use the posibilities provided by Hispania Tours!
